Starting a Social Enterprise? Here’s What Happened at Our Business with Purpose Accelerator

Earlier this month, 15 brilliant individuals came together in Newcastle for our Business with Purpose accelerator—a one-day, fully funded gathering for people exploring the idea of starting a social enterprise or purpose-led business.

We designed the day to offer space: space to reflect, learn, connect and begin to shape ideas into something tangible. Some participants were starting with a clear plan. Others arrived with just a sense that they wanted to do something that matters. All of them brought curiosity, lived experience, and a real desire to make change in their communities.

Grounding Purpose in Practice

Throughout the day, we explored what it really means to build a business with purpose. We talked about what drives us, who we’re trying to help, and how we might sustain that work long-term. The sessions included everything from legal structures and funding options, to mapping out ideas using the Social Business Model Canvas—a tool that helped many connect the dots between their vision and the practical steps needed to get started.

“Although I had previous experience with the Business Model Canvas, this session gave me fresh insights on how to align business goals with social impact.”

What stood out most wasn’t any one topic—it was the collective energy in the room. The generosity of people sharing their stories, their challenges, their hopes. It was the kind of space where someone could say, “I’ve had this idea for years but never knew where to start,” and be met with nods of recognition and encouragement.

How It Felt

We asked participants how they were feeling at the end of the day. Here’s what they told us:

“Ready to start” – Helped with structure
“Inspired and motivated” – Positive guidance and direction
“Much more informed. Ready to be more strategic about my business plan” – It has made me look more deeply into the ‘problem’ that exists, instead of the one that I am motivated by
“Really excited to start with the next steps” – Sustainability, reducing carbon footprint

We also heard:

“It was so special being around so many positive-thinking people with incredible stories… I’m at home beaming and very excited.”workshop activities

Powered by Community

We were lucky to be supported by two incredible social enterprises:

📸 Luminary Photography CIC, who captured the day
🍽️ Magic Hat Café CIC, who provided beautiful food and warm hospitality

Their involvement wasn’t just about logistics—it was a reminder of what’s possible when businesses are built with purpose at their core.

What Happens Next?

This was just the starting point. The cohort is now taking part in a six-week mastermind programme, shaped around what they said they needed most—starting with legal structures. It’s a space to keep building, supported by people who believe in what they’re trying to create.

We don’t claim to have all the answers, but we believe in starting with people. That when you support the changemakers, you create ripple effects that go far beyond any single event.

Thank You

This work is made possible through funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, delivered in partnership with the North East Combined Authority, Gateshead Council, and NEEAL. We’re proud to be part of a wider network of support for early-stage changemakers across our region.

We’ll be running the next Business with Purpose accelerator in Gateshead this September, with one final cohort planned for January 2026. If you’re thinking about starting a social enterprise or purpose-led business, we’d love to welcome you into the space. Find out more here.
